FirstImpression. 첫인상이라는 말이다.
구직자가 지원하는 회사에 깔끔한 첫인상을 주기 위해서는 그의 역량과 비전을 효과적으로 피력하는 이력서와 커버레터가 필요하다. 좋은 첫인상은 인터뷰라는 적극적인 구애작전을 펼 수 있는 기회를 마련해 준다. 많은 준비와 공을 들인 인터뷰를 마치고 난 후에는 어떻게 해야 할까?
Last impression, 직역하면 마지막 인상이 되겠고 Lasting impression, 인터뷰어의 기억에 오래 남는 인상을 각인해 주기 위해 Follow-up letter가 필요하다.

Follow-up letter란 무엇인가? 압박면접이란 것이 인터뷰에서 흔한 용어가 될 만큼 인터뷰는 힘들어지고 있다. 아무리 준비를 해가도 완벽하게 설득을 못시켰다고 생각이 될 때에 이 Follow-up letter를 인터뷰어에게 보낸다.
그럼으로써 다시 본인에 대한 말을 정리할 수 있는 기회를 가질 수 있다. 완벽하게 화기애애한 분위기에서 인터뷰가 진행이 되었다고 해도 역시 Follow-up letter를 보냄으로써 면접기회를 준 것에 대한 감사함을 표시할 수 있다.
사실 인터뷰어가 자기 업무의 한 부분으로서 나를 인터뷰한 것이다. 그렇지만 그 사람의 시간을 나에게 할애해 주고, 그 회사에 대해 더 알 수 있는 기회를 준 것은 감사해야 하는 일이다.

Follow-up letter의 목적이 파악됐으면, 이제 Follow-up letter를 쓰는 것을 해보자.
Follow-up letter는 감사의 글, 나에 대한 비전 정리, 그 회사에 대한 관심, 그리고 꼭 채용이 됐으면 하는 바람으로 구성할 수가 있다. 다음은 하나의 샘플이다.

추가로 내는 권유장(Follow-up letter)을 쓰는 시간은 자신의 인터뷰를 돌아보는 시간이다. 인터뷰를 할 때마다 어떠했는지 다음의 질문에 답을 해보도록 한다.
특히나 생각도 하기 싫은 인터뷰도 있을 수 있겠지만 자신의 인터뷰를 평가하는 것은 다음 인터뷰 기회를 위해서도 꼭 필요한 것이다.
다음의 질문에 대한 답이 긍정적이지 않다면 follow-up letter에 언급 하는 것도 방법이 될 수 있다.

1. 이 포지션에서 요구하는 자질을 미처 말하지 못한 부분이 있는가?
2. 너무 적극적으로 나왔는지? 너무 소극적으로 비쳐졌을지?
3. 이 포지션에 대해 내가 잘 알고 있는지?
4. 가장 큰 실수는 어떤 것이었는가?
5. 말이 너무 많았는지? 말이 너무 적었는지?
6. 질문에 간단명료하게 답을 했는지?
7. 연봉협상에 대한 부분을 지혜롭게 대처했는지?
