`1)For the first time the nation will bring pirates to justice. The authorities are investigating five Somali pirates who were arrested and brought to the country. They are suspected of hijacking a South Korean freighter, Samho Jewelry, in the Arabian Sea on Jan. 15. The case is drawing attention from the international community over how to deal with the suspects. First of all, the Coast Guard and the prosecution should conduct a thorough investigation to confirm the Somalis’ act of piracy. It is necessary to present evidence of their crime as they are refusing to admit to the ship hijacking.

`2)According to investigators, the suspects are shirking their responsibility to the eight other pirates who were shot dead during a rescue operation by Korean Navy commandos on Jan. 21. `3)The Somalis should realize that their denial tactic will not work as they were caught at the scene having commandeered the vessel and taken it toward their base in the African nation. `4)It would be better for them to confess their criminal activities and show repentance for their involvement in piracy. One of them is suspected of firing at the ship’s captain during the raid. The 58- year-old captain, Seok Hae-kyun, was seriously wounded and is now receiving treatment at a local hospital. Investigators must identify the shooter and charge him for what he did.

5) The authorities are adamant to bring the suspects to justice by applying domestic criminal law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.  `6)There is no legal problem with holding them culpable for seizing the freight and taking Seok and 20 other crewmembers hostage. The legal process should be swift and fair to get tough with the suspects. The looming trial should serve as an opportunity for the nation to escalate its war on piracy. It also has to set a good example through the legal process. Korea has the chance to show no tolerance to the heinous international crime. The government must ensure that Korean ships will no longer be an easy target for pirates. 7) Hopefully, the successful rescue mission and ensuing legal action against the captured pirates will teach Somali thugs a lesson that the nation will no longer pay generous ransoms to hostage-takers.

It is also equally important to step up international cooperation in cracking down on pirates. 8) Regrettably, many countries, especially African and Middle Eastern states, are reluctant to take legal action against detained pirates. This makes the global antipiracy campaign much harder. South Korea and its allies need to do more not to let arrested pirates go unpunished. Last but not least, the Lee Myung-bak administration is required to raise its guard to avoid any possible retaliation by Somali pirates. 9) Protecting the lives and properties of its citizens at home and abroad is the foremost mission of the government.

4) It would be better for them to confess their criminal activities and/ show repentance for their involvement in piracy.

① 그들이 범죄활동을 자백하고 (②) 나을 것이다./ ② 해적행위에 연루 된데 대해 참회하는 모습을 보여주는 것이
